Stories of the Land: The Little Patuxent River & Savage Mill

Join Springsong Museum for a special Stories of the Land walk exploring the history and natural beauty of the Little Patuxent River at Savage Mill. Today, the rail bed trail follows along the natural riverside landscape, but this place has a long history of human industry. Terri Berkheimer, our guest hike leader, will share the story of the rail bed and Savage Mill, revealing how the river and surrounding landscape were shaped and used for industry. Rebecca Henson, founder and executive director of Springsong Museum, will bring another layer to the story by sharing Rachel Carson’s connections to the Patuxent area. Along the way, Rebecca will offer readings from Carson’s writings, inviting us to slow down and consider the landscape through Carson’s eyes—and to reflect on the relationship between people, industry, and the natural world.

Together, these stories reveal a landscape that is more than just beautiful. It is a place shaped by rivers, railroads, industry, wildlife, and generations of people.
